Illegal Dumping Can Cost You

The Harris County Municipal Utility District 167 is reminding residents that storm drains are for rainwater only and using them as trash disposal can lead to fines and environmental harm.

Dumping or littering into storm drains is illegal. Individuals who are caught disposing of waste improperly (including dumping debris, pouring chemicals, or allowing pollutants to enter the system) may face fines and penalties under local and state regulations.

Residents should be aware that anything accidentally left on streets, driveways, or sidewalks can be swept into storm drains when it rains. Unlike household plumbing, storm drain systems do not filter or treat water. That means pollutants like oil, trash, and chemicals flow directly into nearby rivers, lakes, and waterways. This can impact wildlife, drinking water sources, and overall community health.

What You Can Do

Protecting your community and avoiding penalties starts with small, everyday actions:

  • Dispose of waste properly. Never dump anything into storm drains or gutters.
  • Pick up litter when you see it. Prevent it from entering the drainage system.
  • Report illegal dumping. If you see someone dumping waste or debris, report it here.

Protect Your Community and Your Wallet

Keeping storm drains clean is not just about environmental responsibility, it is also about compliance with the law. Avoid unnecessary fines by disposing of waste properly and encouraging others to do the same.

When we all do our part, we protect our waterways, our wildlife, and the quality of life in our community.
